New School Information
Construction of the new $18 million Westpark Middle School is underway to the south of the current facility. The shovels have been in the ground since the fall of 2017 and the landscape is continually changing and evolving as progress is made. It’s a very exciting time!
Here’s what you need to know about the new facility:
Shunda Consulting & Construction Management was awarded the construction contract in the summer of 2017.
The facility will be two storeys high, with a small mezzanine above the second floor. The main floor will be 36,340 sq. ft., while the second floor will be 18,439 sq. ft in size. The mezzanine will be 947 sq. ft.
The new school will have a capacity for 500 students.
The facility will be designed and built to minimum LEED Gold standard. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This standard is used as a green rating system for buildings. The building is currently on track to achieve a LEED Gold standard.
- The school will include a solar chimney, the first of its kind in Red Deer and first school in Alberta. The solar chimney will improve the school’s heating and cooling efficiency.
A Student Design Committee from Westpark Middle School has worked in collaboration with Berry Architecture, Shunda Construction, subcontractors and Sky Fire Energy to help with various elements of the new school.
The building itself will be used as a teaching tool. For example, some systems will be encased in glass and monitored to allow students to see them and learn how they operate.
The design of the building will be open concept and will include outdoor classroom space.
Community partnerships will be enhanced because of the new school. Red Deer Minor Baseball will have an office in the facility. There will be a concession and two exterior washrooms for community use, which will be funded through The City of Red Deer. The third floor mezzanine will also be used as a teaching/observation area.
Students from Red Deer College, School of Education will have a regular presence in the building.
A sod turning event took place in October 2017 to kick off construction of the new school.
A grand opening celebration for the new facility will take place some time in the fall of 2019. At that time, a 50th anniversary celebration will also be held for the existing school.
