New School Information


Construction of the new $18 million Westpark Middle School is now complete in the interior of the building. The shovels have been in the ground since the fall of 2017 and the landscaping will be completed in the spring of 2020

Here’s what you need to know about the new facility:

Construction Stats:

  • Shunda Consulting & Construction Management was awarded the construction contract in the summer of 2017.

  • The facility is two storeys high, with a small mezzanine above the second floor. The main floor will be 36,340 sq. ft., while the second floor will be 18,439 sq. ft in size. The mezzanine will be 947 sq. ft.

  • The new school has a capacity for 500 students.

  • The facility has been designed and built to minimum LEED Gold standard. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This standard is used as a green rating system for buildings. The building is currently on track to achieve a LEED Gold standard.

  • The school includes a solar chimney, the first of its kind in Red Deer and first school in Alberta. The solar chimney will improve the school’s heating and cooling efficiency.

Fun Facts:

  • A Student Design Committee from Westpark Middle School has worked in collaboration with Berry Architecture, Shunda Construction, subcontractors and Sky Fire Energy to help with various elements of the new school.

  • The building itself can be used as a teaching tool. For example, some systems are encased in glass and monitored to allow students to see them and learn how they operate.

  • The design of the building is an open concept and includes outdoor classroom space.

  • Community partnerships have been enhanced because of the new school. Red Deer Minor Baseball has an office in the facility. There is a concession and two exterior washrooms for community use funded by The City of Red Deer. The third floor mezzanine can be used as a teaching/observation area.

  • Students from Red Deer College, School of Education have regularly scheduled courses in the building.
